How to Get Your Ham Radio License in 4 Easy Steps

Want to get into ham radio or DMR?

First, you need your ham radio license.

Don’t worry. Getting started is easier than you may think.

Here are 4 simple steps to help you get your license and get closer to going on the air.

Step 1: Watch This Video

Not sure where to start?

Start with this video. It will help you learn how getting your ham radio license works.

Then move on to Step 2.

Step 2: Get Your FREE FRN

Next, you need an FRN from the FCC.

FRN means FCC Registration Number.

It is free to get.

Here’s what to do:

1. Create an account on the FCC website.

2. Log in to your account.

3. Get your FRN.

4. Save your FRN. You’ll need it when you sign up for your test.

Get your FRN here:
https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do

That’s it. Now you’re ready to study.

Step 3: Study for Your Ham Radio Test

Most new hams start with the Technician Class license.

The test has 35 questions. You need to get at least 26 right to pass.

You don’t have to study alone.

Our friends at Ham Radio Prep have a course that can help you get ready for the test.

Step 4: Pick a Date for Your Test

This step is important.

Pick a date and put it on your calendar.

Don’t wait until you “feel ready.”

Having a test date gives you a goal. It can also help you stay on track while you study.

You can take your test in person or find an online test.
