Exploring 220 MHz Repeater Operations with Ralph at Hamvention 2024 | Ham Radio Insights

So, I had this awesome chat with this fellow named Ralph NØAWN at Hamvention 2024. He's running this great little repeater on 220 MHz over in Ham Lake, Minnesota, and it's kind of like this wee community hub for a whole lot of engineers. Who knew that engineers could be so much fun?

Ralph has a BCR 220 repeater, which has a range of about 40 miles. He's on channel 224.82 with a PL tone of 1114.8 Hz. If you're in the area and want to give it a shot, his call sign is NØAWN.

But this is not at all about the technicalities. Ralph NØAWN and his team use the repeater to connect, exchange ideas, and basically just have a good time—it's like their own little radio clubhouse. And it's in this way that the world of ham radio is pretty nifty. It's not purely a piece of tech. It's the people involved and those connections.

One thing that really surprised me about Ralph and his group is their passion for technology. Clearly, they like experimenting with their radios and testing new setups. And that's what makes their repeater really special.

And, as a fellow tech nerd, myself, it's really inspiring to talk to Ralph and his friends. Once again, the community reminded me to do whatever you love, no matter how passionate you feel about it, and always find others who share your passion.
