ARRL Field Day: Why Hams Wait All Year for This Weekend

That’s right, it’s almost time for ham radio’s biggest weekend of the yearARRL Field Day. Whether you’ve been calling CQ for decades or just unboxed your first handheld, Field Day is where the ham community truly comes alive.

So What Is Field Day Anyway?

Started back in 1933 by F.E. Handy, ARRL Field Day was designed as a nationwide test of emergency communication skills. Hams across the U.S. and Canada would head outdoors—literally into “the field”—to set up portable stations and see who could make the most contacts in 24 hours. That first year? It was an instant hit.

Today, over 31,000 operators join in each year. And it’s not just about testing radios—it’s about testing yourself, your setup, and your ability to connect no matter where you are. It's the Super Bowl of ham radio, but with more generators, grill smoke, and friendly competition.

While Field Day is primarily focused on analog HF and VHF/UHF operation, there’s still room for DMR—especially for local communication or clubs integrating digital into their setup.

For full contest rules and to find a Field Day near you, visit ARRL’s official Field Day page.

What Makes It So Special?

It’s the perfect blend of emergency preparedness, community bonding, and good old-fashioned radio fun.

  • You’ll see tents and towers, wires and wagons.
  • Clubs grilling burgers while logging QSOs.
  • Veterans mentoring newcomers.
  • And kids making their first-ever contact.

You’re not just showing off your setup—you’re showing the world what ham radio is capable of. Whether it’s a grid-down emergency or a backyard cookout, Field Day proves we can always get the message through.
